Race Date: Saturday, September 6, 2008. On time registration deadline August 6, 2008.
Time: 9:00 A.M. No Early Starters. Course Description: See Map at bottom of page. The race follows an exceptionally scenic course composed of a loop plus two out-and-back sections. Runners will start at the No Name Lake Campground and be treated to spectacular views of the Pend Oreille River and mountains of the Colville National Forest of Northeastern Washington and the Selkirk Mountain Range in Idaho as they pass by Bead, Mystic and Cook's Lakes before finishing back at No Name Lake. All but one mile of the course is on trail or Forest Service dirt road. The one mile of asphalt comes right after the start. This is a challenging course with numerous rigorous climbs. Hill training is highly recommended.
The area is filled with a variety of interesting animals. The race directors have seen each of the following on or near the course: white-tail deer, elk, moose, raccoon, bobcat, coyote, cougar, wolverine, black bear, turkey, red squirrel, chipmunk, rabbit, skunk (smelled, anyway), lizard, turtle, tree frog, garter snake, mourning dove, Canada goose, snow goose, osprey, bald eagle, red-tailed hawk, ruffed grouse, red-shafted flicker, pileated woodpecker, red-naped sapsucker, house wren, great blue heron, merganser, mallard duck, loon, and (waiting for you to DNF) turkey vulture. Stay on the trail itself to avoid damaging the vegetation. Traffic should be light. Nevertheless, there will be some firewood cutters and some grouse and bear hunters on the roads. Watch for vehicles. Please run on the left side of the road for the first mile of the race. Entry Fee US Funds: $70 postmarked by August 6, 2008. $85 Late. DAY OF RACE REGISTRATION--$100 (no guarantee of shirt size) NO REFUNDS AFTER August 18, 2008. NO EXCEPTIONS. Directions To Race: Newport, WA is located near the Idaho border, approximately 45 miles north of Spokane, WA. To reach the start from Newport, follow Highway 2 across the Pend Oreille River and immediately turn sharply left onto Le Clerc Creek Road. Follow the river north on Le Clerc Creek Road. After about 2.8 miles, just past Pioneer Park, at the little pond, take a right up the steep hill on the Bead Lake Rd. Continue on Bead Lake Rd., and do not turn right toward Marshall Lake, but continue another mile until Indian Creek Rd. intersects from the left with Bead Lake Rd. You now will have gone 3.5 miles from Le Clerc Creek Road. Continue up the hill to the right (do not turn left on Indian Creek Rd.) for another approximately 2.7 miles to a clear-cut that is growing back. The road curves to the right through the clear cut, then to the left up a hill and at the top of the hill will be a road to the right up the hill (Bead Lake Peak Road) and a road next to it (Bead Lake Drive) that has a bunch of signs with cabin-owners' names. Do not turn on Bead Lake Drive, but continue straight ahead on Bead Lake Road for another 3/4 mile to where Bead Lake Dr. comes out the other end after it circles around. Bear left and continue less than 1/4 mile (passing Crystal Shores Road on the way) to the entrance to No Name Lake Campground which is the start of the race. Check in will be inside the campground.
Packet Pickup: Runners must check in at the No Name Lake Campground race headquarters on race day between 7:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. Please park on the southwest side of the road and walk into the camp- ground, as parking is very limited. Runners must wear their numbers at all times so that they are visible and can be checked at each aid station. Make sure the aid station volunteers record your numbers at each checkpoint. Start: 9:00 a.m. at No Name Lake near Bead Lake, approximately 10 miles from Newport, WA. No Early Starters. Course Closure: The Uncle Joe 50 Km finish line is at No Name Lake. The course will be open until 5:00 p.m. Those who are still on the course after that time will be responsible for their own safety. Course Support: Aid stations with water, electrolyte replacement drinks, and various goodies will be located at (approximately) 6 miles (water and electroyte drink), 7.5 miles, 11.5 miles, 15.5 miles, 20.8 miles, 24.0 miles (water, crackers and honey only), 27.2 miles and at the finish. DO NOT LITTER! Littering or other behavior that is detrimental to the environment is not only impolite, but also jeopardizes our Forest Service permit for the run. Any such action will result in disqualification. Carry your energy bar wrappers, cups, crying towels, etc., and leave them at the nearest aid station. You may leave drop bags for Aid Stations #2 & 4 and Aid Stations #5 & 7. Do not use paper sacks in case of rain. Put your name on your drop bags, and deposit them at the designated place at check-in by 7:45 a.m. on race day. They will be returned to the finish after the Aid Stations close. Crew vehicles allowed on the road sections of the course except for the out-and-back section to the northwest past Cooks Lake (from mile mark 20.8 to 24.0 and return to 27.2). At the start we will hold the crew vehicles for 20 minutes to allow the runners to reach Bead Lake Trail #127 unimpeded. Drivers can access the course by driving up Bead Lake Peak Road for 7 miles where they will come upon Aid Station #3. We ask all drivers to be cautious, drive slowly both for safety and for dust control for the runners, and not turn around and drive back and forth along the course. When you stop to wait for your runner, please find a place where you can pull completely off the road. When you reach Aid Station #5/7 at the bottom of the hill past Mystic Lake, be sure to turn left back toward the finish, as no crew vehicles are allowed on the road to the right, out northwest toward Cooks Lake and beyond. You may wait for your runner at Aid Station #5/7 or further along the road back toward the finish at No Name Lake. They will be running approximately 3 ¼ miles out on that out-and-back section to Aid Station #6 before returning the same distance back to Aid Station #5/7. When you arrive at the slate quarry at approximately 30 miles, do not stop there, but proceed to the finish line area and park along the south side of the road as you did in the morning. Please do not try to drive back into the campground at this time because runners will be finishing inside the camp- ground. If you come upon a runner at the quarry, please stop and wait for them to run all the way through because the road is truly a one-lane road at that point. Runners may not accept any aid from a moving vehicle. Your runner could be disqualified for violation of this rule. If you wish to hand something to your runner, drive ahead of him/her and stop at the side of the road before doing so. We appreciate your attention to these rules to help us have a safe day for everyone. Crews are a valuable part of ultrarunning. Remember that CREW stands for “Cranky Runner, Endless Waiting.” Thank you for being a part of the Uncle Joe 50. Crew members need to remember to eat and drink, also, throughout the day. Have a fun time. Confidence Plates: To easily keep you on the course, we will have confidence signs in bright yellow (see photo) at various part of the course to make sure you don't wander onto some logging road that takes you to Idaho or Canada. This is what you will see whenever you are wondering which way to go.

Additional porto-potties will also be provided at the Start/Finish area at No Name Lake. Nature has provided 173,786,432 trees and bushes along the course for your convenience. Drop Outs: If you decide that you are going to drop out of the race, you must check in at the nearest aid station so that the race organizers will not have to send out a search party, but can arrange to transport you back to the finish. Awards/Results: All finishers will receive a high-tech shirt. Awards will be presented to the first male and female Overall, Masters (40-49), Super Masters (50-59), Super-Duper Masters (60-69), and Super-Duper-Pooper-Scooper Masters (70+). Additional prizes will be given by random drawing during the award ceremony. The directors will try to have the ceremony as soon as the last person finishes or at 5:00 p. m. If you need to leave before that time, have someone else pickup your award. Awards will not be mailed. Results will be available online at www.unclejoe50km.org approximately one week following the race. Post-Race Picnic: A picnic will be held at the finish following the race. We hope you will all stay for the awards ceremony and picnic where all participants will be able to thank our volunteers and tell each other tall tales about their race. The entry fee includes a meal ticket for the runner and one crew/family member. Additional tickets can be purchased for $5 each.
